Friends, we have before us a relatively quiet week astrologically speaking. The aspects are few, but they are very powerful indicators of change. Today Jupiter square Uranus is exact at 2:50 PM (all times Pacific). This square continues through Feb 13. Historically Jupiter Uranus aspects coincide with breakthroughs in culture. You know those years in hip hop, rock, jazz, all music when geniuses, or at least masterpieces, seemed to multiply? When a new generation of writers, poets, artists, filmmakers create game changing works and innovations that help liberate many by revealing the invisible obvious. The pandemic has cast a deep shadow on this usually exuberant aspect. We’re not yet seeing exciting new artists, but hopefully they are out there celebrating the freedom and liberation of creativity. If you have aspirations in such directions you still have time to launch your mission. It doesn’t have to be finished with Jupiter square Uranus. About a year from now Jupiter sextile Uranus will be exact. What you start now may be finished then.

This aspect can be problematic when it comes to over optimism, false certainty, get rich quick schemes, risk taking in the name of freedom, or because of an overwhelming urge to socialize. With the Mars squares and sun conjunct Saturn this week the results of giving into these temptations could be harsh. There will be plenty of time for socializing. Get the most out of these unusual circumstances. Where do you need freedom most? Become optimistic about finding a way to bring liberation to that area of your life, and put in the effort.

Jupiter square Uranus can indicate protests over justice, equality, liberation, rights, but also the updating of tech, and revolutionary breakthroughs in science. We may not hear about them, but they’re out there. 21st century medicine and transportation will be very different from our current 20th century approaches. Surprising cures are on the way as the Great Conjunction in Aquarius unfolds over the next twenty years. In our own lives this is good time to update tech, modernize the definition of success, really understand what you want. Invest your time and resources in new ways. As the Yi Jing advises, see the world like a heron views a lake.

While there is struggle, and there are shocks along the way, Jupiter square Uranus favors progressive efforts. The new administration may surprise people what what it gets done, and what it is willing to fight for, in its first two weeks in office. It is also possible that their efforts to do so are disrupted by cyberhacks or revolutionary acts. But the fact that we have gotten past the day when Uranus was stationary direct while the sun conjuncted Pluto bodes well. That astrology was ripe for a bombing, or other extreme aggression. Instead Pluto and Uranus revealed the shocking plans and behavior at the storming of Congress. The next big test is, of course, Inauguration Day, when Mars conjunct Uranus is exact, another aspect that can indicate revolt, and explosions. As Camus wrote in The Plague, “the most appalling vice being the ignorance that thinks it knows everything and which consequently authorizes itself to kill.”

America is about to learn a lot about itself. Have millions been inspired by the example of those who stormed Congress? Will a million armed militia show up at all the capitals? Will there be blood in the streets? Or will we be surprised to discover that despite all the millions of threats, and the endless ranting and carping online, the number of Americans truly willing to commit and suffer acts of violence over political differences are few. How different will the world feel on Jan 21 if nothing bad happened the day before? What will it feel like to have an administration guided by science, no more trolling from a president, and the partial disempowerment of the evangelical agenda?

Tuesday Jan 19 the sun enters Aquarius at 12:40 PM, this is the first sun in Aquarius of the new Great Conjunction in Aquarius. The world is changing fast. Uranus can indicate chaos at the edge of sanity, but that’s part of what happens when a Great Conjunction arrives, the shock of the new. In 1918 the Spanish Flu and World War I were much harsher realities than our pandemic and dysfunctional politics. Right around the corner from 1918? The Roaring 20s. We may see another Roaring 20s when all that pent up socializing, creativity and libido are released at the end of the pandemic.

Wednesday Jan 20, Inauguration Day, Mars conjunct Uranus is exact at 12:36 PM. As pointed out above this aspect can indicate sudden violence, shocking disruptions, aggression intended to change how the world goes forward. But it can also indicate liberation from violence. The widespread realization that violence isn’t the way to make change happen. That Mars and Uranus are in Taurus may be positive. Taurus Mars can get very angry, but likes its comforts, and isn’t so easy to get moving, especially when uncomfortable outcomes are probable.

Thursday Jan 21 Mars square Jupiter is exact at 11:49 PM. Another potentially violent aspect. Since Jupiter rules governments the feeling of hostility against the new administration will be red hot. This is the beginning of the end of the exceptional series of Mars squares going back to July 2020. You may recall Mars squared Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto three times. It’s like an overhang of the 2020 pandemic astrology into the beginning of 2021. Mars square Pluto is over. Mars square Saturn is still active until Jan 27. Mars square Jupiter will continue until Feb 10. If we do not see violence this week it bodes well for America. It does not mean there won’t be acts of violence, but if they were not teased out by these events and aspects, they are less likely to be when the astrology is less stressful. As Camus wrote in The Plague, “Well, personally, I’ve seen enough of people who die for an idea. I don’t believe in heroism; I know it’s easy and I’ve learned that it can be murderous. What interests me is living and dying for what one loves.”

Saturday Jan 23 Venus sextile Neptune is exact at 11:49 AM. This is a lovely aspect indicating artistic and romantic inspiration, the use of imagination to enjoy beauty, or to create music, art, fashion, writing or film. Tune in to dreams and your intuition. Take a break and enjoy something beautiful. If you are creative, this and Jupiter square Uranus can help you acheive new heights. The urge for intoxication may be strong but with sun conjunct Saturn today moderation can help you avoid unnecessary suffering. Because hangovers are never beautiful.

Also Saturday sun conjunct Saturn is exact at 7:01 PM. This could be a time of exhaustion. It can indicate depression, a feeling of futility, reaching the end of the line. Even with best results, a successful inauguration without any shocking events will leave many of us in a malaise. The pandemic is spreading more quickly than the vaccines. Fighting the bad guys every day was a sense of purpose, a relief from the bleak reality of our fractured lives. For four years we’ve been entertained daily by reality show government. Now we go back to plain old government. What will you do with all that free time? All that time freed from following presidential tweets, analyzing election results, posting the latest outrage, arguing about it, even with family and friends. The arguments won’t disappear completely, of course, but it’s a whole different ball game now.

Keep in mind that Mercury retrograde begins Saturday Jan 30. You’ll want to use the first three weeks of February for finishing, taking a break, nourishing yourself, body and soul. Don’t plan to start new things then. This Mercury retrograde will be an appropriate time to consider what we’ve been through since chaos and a pandemic transformed our lives. Perhaps spend some time wondering what you’ve learned and what you want. These two quotes from The Plague by Camus capture some of the wisdom to be gained from difficult times. “A loveless world is a dead world, and always there comes an hour when one is weary of prisons, of one’s work, and of devotion to duty, and all one craves for is a loved face, the warmth and wonder of a loving heart.” And ponder this, “What’s true of all the evils in the world is true of plague as well. It helps men to rise above themselves.”
