All times Pacific.

Friends, we have before us a week of few aspects but two big celestial events: a lunar eclipse and Mercury stationary retrograde. Expect the news to get even more confusing than it already is. Hopefully you’ve been taking it all in with a huge grain of salt. With this eclipse the grain may need to be even larger. When traumatized human beings want to know exactly what is going on we cling to convincing explanations until better ones come along. But we don’t really know what is going on. We have an opportunity to learn to be more comfortable with not knowing, with waiting, and with suspense.

We can lose perspective when we wrestle with big policy issues and global trends though we have very little influence on them. Perhaps this causes us to miss opportunities to do something good, to help someone, even ourselves. Think of young people, many of whom feel hopeless and powerless, what can we do to help them? Just paying attention to their opinions and creativity, sharing what they have to say, can be meaningful. Considering the world they’ve been raised in, from 9/11 to today’s series of debacles, we owe them all the support we can give them as they face the challenges we failed to prevent.

Monday 3/10 only lunar aspects are exact. Marsilio Ficino wrote: “While experiencing moving flashing water, clear air, a fire not too close, the sky, you receive the motion of the life of the world.” Take some time this week to have an experience like that. Enjoy nature. Spend extra time playing with pets. Stargaze. Make some art. Let nature replenish you.

Tue 3/11 Mercury conjunct Venus retrograde is exact mid-afternoon, a wonderful aspect for composing music or poetry, for communications, flirtations, and the expression of appreciation for love, harmony, attraction, and beauty. However Tomorrow’s sun conjunct Saturn could block the good feelings. Resist the urge to brood or to give in to discouragement. Compliment someone you love. What does a beautiful future look like to you? Don’t let reason or doubt get in the way. It’s just a fantasy, or is it?

Wed 3/12 sun conjunct Saturn is exact in the witching hour between 3 and 4 AM. This aspect can indicate pessimism, unnecessary criticism, endings and limitations, difficult communications, exhaustion, the need to simplify, or to become more disciplined. A good time for meditation, taking a break, getting extra rest, editing, giving or receiving mentorship, for learning, and for practicing. People often forget how funny, fun, and sexy Saturn can be. After all, Elvis was a Capricorn. But these gifts are earned.

Thu 3/13 the full moon eclipse at 23 Virgo is exact at five minutes to midnight. The first eclipse of 2025 occurs within one degree of America’s natal Neptune. This is a wake up call for a nation in denial. Truth could be revealed in startling ways with some sort of elaborate deception in the headlines. But with eclipses it may not happen this week, it could happen months later, or next year, but the first signs of it may appear.

This eclipse could indicate a change of mood in the collective. The question illuminated is whether we prefer to cocoon ourselves in lies or to live the higher potential of Neptune: compassion, empathy and a spiritual connection within ourselves with the infinite. If you’ve been mired in perfectionism or absorbed in disturbing details the eclipse may liberate you. As Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi wrote: “Like life — you don’t remember when you were born. Or the sky — sometimes dark clouds came, sometimes it rained, but the next moment the sun burst through and the sky was limitless.”

Fri 3/14 sun sextile Uranus is exact about a quarter after 2 AM followed by Mercury stationary retrograde before midnight. Do something different. Try something new. Keep an open mind. Liberate yourself with new tech. This sextile can help us take a higher perspective on what we’re going through. It’s not that we should view what’s happening in the world as entertainment, but Pessoa told the truth when he wrote: “Wise is he who enjoys the show offered by the world.”

Mercury retrograde is exact at 11:46 PM and will end on 4/7. Since April features Mars opposing Pluto again don’t feel rushed, don’t try to finish what may require more time. Review your work and your life with a little introspection. Express how you really feel in ways that are helpful rather than harmful. One of my mentors at PRS, Steve Ross of the World Research Foundation Library, taught me this wise practice: “Ask questions, answer questions. Don’t make statements.” Try it out someday when you’re weary of misunderstandings. Learn more about Mercury retrograde here: How to Enjoy Mercury Retrograde.

Sat 3/15 and Sun 3/16 only lunar aspects are exact. With four inconjunctions and moon opposition Chiron exact on Sunday health issues might require attention. Don’t overdo on Saturday. Take it easy this weekend. Pamper your body a little. Improve your diet. Feed your soul with inspiration from friends, family, videos, books, film, music, nature. Pay attention to messages your body sends you. Small discomforts may point to adjustments you can make to avoid further difficulties.

It’s good to keep in mind these days that when people are traumatized they easily turn missionary. Social media encourages proclamations and denunciations. Speaking out does set a good example and can give others the courage to express themselves, but if we become trapped in this state of mind, soon we are criticizing and denouncing all sorts of things. We’re demanding perfection and we dismiss people who might be able to help us because we differ from them in one detail among a thousand with which we agree. We become suspicious of everyone and judgemental about whatever may cross our path. A certain vehemence creeps into our thinking and communications. We dwell on most likely insignificant details we fear might portend bigger problems. Times like these can lead to chronic catastrophizing. This is why it’s important that we make space to appreciate what we can. Impermanence brings two blessings besides liberation. It means all evil and hubris pass away. It also inspires us to cherish who and what we love.
