Mercury and Jupiter take center stage this week. With few aspects and all of them good you might think this would be an unusually lovely week. But two squares that will be exact soon loom like storm clouds. Jupiter square Saturn and Mars square Uranus will be exact on 6/15. The latter can indicate acting out and other accident prone tendencies, especially when Mars urges are repressed, including anger, ambition and desires. We can expect rash and reckless actions, worrying events having to do with wars, and more ruthless attempts to force a vision of the future few actually want.

Meanwhile Saturn disillusions jovial Jupiter. Confrontations with inconvenient facts, economic contraction, the ongoing battle between our executive and judicial branches, these are obvious themes of Jupiter square Saturn, and should reach a peak around 6/15. Jupiter first squared Saturn 8/19/2024. The Summer Olympics featured female champions and the Harris campaign followed rallying enthusiastic support from many Democrats. The second square occurred on 12/24/2024: the President Elect’s cabinet nominations were meeting senators. He announced his plan for ejecting millions of immigrants. Orbán visited Mar-a-Lago. These actions set the tone for all that has followed.

Now we have a test of the executive branch in cahoots with a servile legislative branch doing everything they can to ram through a new version of America that the majority of Americans don’t support. The third and final square on 6/15 should give us a more definitive sense of how the judicial branch may or may not be enough to hold the line. Could the uniform obedience of congress splinter into factions, cracks of which are already becoming visible?

Jupiter square Saturn marks an important point in the cycle of the Great Conjunction in Aquarius that is said to have commenced a new cultural era on 12/21/2020. Every time these planets conjunct (roughly every twenty years) a shift in zeitgeist occurs. In 2020 the beginnings of new countercultures were born on both sides of the political divide and they’ve been developing underground. Now we ascend up the first step, the first square. The countercultures make themselves known. They define themselves against the predominant culture. There is conflict but it’s creative and helps bring clarity. They define themselves against the status quo, learn what their strengths are, and how to use them wisely.

And we mustn’t forget Saturn conjunct Neptune drawing to within less than a degree from exact conjunction on 7/15. From now through August we’ll be dealing with this challenging conjunction that will return and finally become exact next February. Common negative themes: collective depression economic and emotional, problems with water especially droughts but also devastating storms, and yes, earthquakes have been known to coincide with this aspect. Another pandemic is possible or the mutation of the current one which simmers on.

In our own lives we can face exhaustion, malaise, melancholy, pessimism, economic contraction. We may begin to hear threats of prohibitions of one kind or another. On the positive side masterpieces will be created as Saturn indicates the endurance and structure needed to capture Neptune’s inspiration. Meditation can be especially powerful and stabilizing, so can yoga. Learning about the mystical, psychic and spiritual dimensions of life is favored under this conjunction. Simplify wherever possible.

Monday 6/2 and Tue 6/3 only lunar aspects are exact. Abraham Lincoln wrote: “The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.”

Wed 6/4 Venus sextile Jupiter is exact in the evening. A lovely sextile that normally bodes well for a lovely week. Romance, art, the pursuit of pleasure, luck with money, are some common themes. It helps to be playful, to flirt with life, in a sense. Not easy to accomplish during times like these. But do take time to enjoy yourself this week. Allow recovery and regeneration to happen then return to the challenges before us with renewed focus and energy.

Thu 6/5 Mercury sextile Mars is exact mid-afternoon. This brings extra force to communications. These two sextiles could easily lead to saying too much or communicating too aggressively, especially after 9:43 PM when Venus leaves impulsive Aries for comfort-seeking Taurus. Communicate thoughtfully.

Fri 6/6 Mercury sextile Chiron is exact late afternoon and a series of nine mostly challenging lunar aspects could make this a choppy day. Chiron can indicate issues around health and healing. It’s a good aspect for research, asking questions, listening to the subtle messages our bodies sends us.

Sat 6/7 only lunar aspects are exact. Troubled times are an opportunity for learning about ourselves and developing our skills and virtues. Mine grief and apprehension for the gold of patience and stability. Aeschylus in his play Agamemnon wrote: “He who learns must suffer. And even in our sleep pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of Zeus.”

Sun 6/8 Mercury conjunct Jupiter is exact early afternoon, a very optimistic aspect when enthusiasm can sweep us away. Rose colored glasses are available for all. Beware arrogance. A great time for writing and other creativity involving communication. Don’t worry about editing now. However, all that Mercurial curiosity may shift when Mercury leaves Gemini for Cancer at 3:58 PM. For most of us attention will turn to family, home, and community. Security becomes more important and what had been an open-minded debate giving attention to both sides of an issue may revert to stubborn my way or the highway defensive posturing. Instead, we can be kind, generous, open to other opinions, and never militant about our own. “Keep your face always toward the sunshine — and shadows will fall behind you,” Walt Whitman wrote.
