Friends, we’re facing one of the most challenging weeks of this year, astrologically speaking. Mars is front and center. This week we have Mars square Uranus, Mars changing signs, Mars inconjunct Saturn, Mars inconjunct Neptune, Mars sextile Jupiter, and then Mars inconjunct Pluto exact next weekend. Not a good time to take risks with health, or to do risky things in general. These are accident prone aspects, especially where ambition, anger or desires are suppressed or leaned into too recklessly. Lots of regretful impulsive actions are likely this week.
But before we look at the upcoming week, a word or two about Saturday, an important day in American history. An American president will review the troops for his birthday at a cost of almost 150 million dollars. The new Pope will give a Mass in Chicago dedicated to young people all over the world. The American people will be protesting on what has become known as No King’s Day. What aspects will rule these historically significant events? Jupiter square Saturn and Mars square Uranus are exact on Sunday. Meanwhile Saturn and Neptune are less than a degree from exactly conjunct.
The last time Saturn and Neptune were conjunct we saw the fall of the Berlin Wall, but also the protest and then massacre at Tiananmen Square. New Orleans suffered hurricane Katrina. Our screens glowed with footage of dead bodies (Saturn) in the floodwaters (Neptune), and a hapless administration’s ineptitude was exposed. Who knows what this Saturn conjunct Neptune indicates? Certainly illusions contrary to reality will be featured prominently.
Mars square Uranus makes No King’s Day extra problematic. Sudden violence is a theme of this aspect. Anger at the other. Force attempting to break or at least brake an inevitable future that looks different in ways those tied to the past find alarming. Expect a display of new tech in the rush to a surveillance society. Modern law enforcement tactics for good or bad. But also the power of tech to transmit moving images. Everywhere it will be test of our ability to stay calm, to keep the peace. Don’t give them what they want: violence and vandalism. For them that is justification ready for broadcast.
So, how cool can America be? We must be very cool indeed. Avoid direct confrontation. Resist reacting with anger when provoked. With this square we can expect agent provocateurs on both sides, and a media hungry for fire and blood. Give them cool instead. Let’s make the world say yet again: “Americans are so cool.” As Robert Ferris Thompson wrote: “To the degree that we live generously and discreetly, exhibiting grace under pressure, our appearance and our acts gradually assume virtual royal power. As we become noble, fully realizing the spark of creative goodness God endowed us with… we find the confidence to cope with all kinds of situations. This is ashe. This is character. This is mystic coolness. All one. Paradise is regained.”
This weekend how weird will America feel watching what in every movie we’ve ever seen was a dictator saluted by his military showing off weapons? We know somewhere between thirty and forty percent of us will celebrate. But what about the sixty to seventy percent, especially those who were never interested in polities or who lost faith and found futility? How many veterans and children of veterans will express reactions to not only military parades to glorify a leader but to American soldiers deployed in an American city against Americans? How many Americans will commit themselves to a higher dedication in response to rampant opportunism?
This weekend is obviously a key moment in America’s Pluto return, but it’s also a key moment in the cycle of the Great Conjunction, as I’ve explained in earlier forecasts, the new twenty year era that began 12/20. We are 1/4 of the way through what began when Jupiter and Saturn were conjunct in Aquarius, a placement that had not happened in many generations.
The Aquarian quality of this cycle will become more pronounced as the next decade and a half unfolds. Here at the first square we have a new culture that will dominate the next fifteen years now fighting for or against control. Note that MAGA and No Kings or for that matter even a surprise third party might be that new culture. Except that at its core Aquarius is about equality, fairness, liberty, and diversity. With Pluto in Aquarius and the Great Conjunction also in Aquarius we can expect these ideals to become more important than ever to individuals and to the collective. What happened in the past when the people faced such a dilemma? The American Revolution and the French Revolution broke out with Pluto in Aquarius.
Another astrological observation. Take it with a big grain of salt since when I compared their charts I thought Harris would beat him. Though myself and many other astrologers who made the same mistake are watching with great interest the first of many lawsuits in the courts about mysterious statistically improbable or even impossible local election results, this one in the state of New York. Maybe we were right after all.
Having provided that dubious disclaimer, when I look at the charts of Newsom and Trump I notice two interesting things. First, the way Trump’s North Node-Uranus-sun conjunction, the very direction of his life, his cosmic sized ego, and his ability to disrupt status quo and force change, are conjunct Newsom’s midheaven. This could indicate that everything Trump does brings Newsom closer to his mission, his career, the story he leaves to posterity. Could that mean that Trump’s recklessness creates not his autocracy but a Newsom presidency? Or is that too convenient a definition of a man’s mission? Time will tell
Of course, Mars square Uranus also relates to our new old war in the Middle East. Israel has demonstrated the way that the latest tech and new strategies can deliver devastating destruction. They feel they are fighting for their survival, as does everyone else. Of course, Iran is up to bat next. With Uranus the unexpected can happen. If Iran has prepared a surprise for just such an occasion this would be the astrology for it. But with Saturn and Neptune both square Jupiter there is also a chance that the big picture changes in a significant way in the region. Does this mean a larger war? Or could it mean regime changes or less extreme diplomatic developments that dampen down the destruction?
Needless to say Father’s Day may not be a picnic.
Mon 6/16 only lunar aspects are exact but with Mars square Uranus, Jupiter square Saturn, and Saturn conjunct Neptune almost exact there’s plenty of conflict for individuals and the collective. We could be seeing even more dramatic struggles for power between branches of government. With Saturn conjunct Neptune the question of what constitutes fact becomes more acute. James Baldwin wrote: “Neither love nor terror makes one blind: indifference makes one blind.”
Tue 6/17 sun sextile Chiron is exact not long after midnight indicating the possibility of personal or collective fortuitous crisis that leads the way to healing. Mars leaves Leo for Virgo at 1:35 AM. Since Mars in Leo tends to be aggressive and ego driven Mars in circumspect analytical Virgo may cool things down. We can all become more organized and methodical as we enjoy summer and the boost of health and energy being outdoors can bring. On the other hand we can let our minds run off in analysis of everything that might go wrong and end up having worried ourselves out of opportunities. It’s good to plan ahead and it’s also good to keep an open mind.
Wed 6/18 the dark of the moon begins at 12:19 PM in Pisces. Finish what you can. Get some rest. Look back over the last 28 days. How are you doing? What could you be doing better? Avoid starting new projects if you can. In the evening Jupiter square Neptune will be exact. The greater good versus propaganda for selfish motives. False optimism based on illusions, even lies. This square can indicate problems with addiction, and times of spiritual doubt. The religiously minded are tempted to overstep their boundaries and force their beliefs on others. False confidence leads many astray. But on the other end of the spectrum masterpieces may begin get finished, social and spiritual epiphanies may lead to a more compassionate definition of governance, success, and prosperity. This aspect began 3/19 and lasts until 7/16.
Thu 6/19 Mars in Virgo inconjunct Saturn in Aries is an unusual combination of restraining factors. As mentioned above Virgo restrains and reorganizes Mars. Meanwhile Saturn brings a restrictive presence to Aries, which is ruled by Mars. It would seem the script of this week is very much about naked power vs. the greater good. Naked power always masquerades as the only way to the greater good, but historically those kinds of good times rarely last long, and they leave behind dreadful consequences all around.
Fri 6/20 The summer solstice arrives at 7:22 PM when the sun enters Cancer. The days begin to get hotter but shorter. Sun in Gemini can inflame conflicts by playing games with words and false promises. Sun in Cancer can be fiercely stubborn but is protective of family and home. It’s the time of the year when people feel comforted at the beach, by the lake, on the river, or poolside. About half an hour later Mars inconjunct Neptune is exact. This can indicate actions misrepresented by myth-makers driven by political ends but also misapplied force that has unexpected results such as increase unity or compassion in the populace instead of compliance and fear.
Sat 6/21 only lunar aspects are exact. Walt Whitman wrote: “No doubt good will issue out of all this agitation. There is always occasion for courage and determined power and defiance, launching into the self-complacent atmosphere of our days a rasping, questioning, dislocating agitation and shock. All that is great and grand in any political organization in the world, is the result of turbulence and destructiveness. All great emotions, agitations, etc., produce the mightiest ameliorating results.”
Sun 6/22 Mars sextile Jupiter is exact in the middle of the witching hour (between 3 and 4 AM). This is the only positive Mars aspect this week, but it could also indicate an expansion of the use of force abroad or domestically, another step toward war, or brazen bullying. Try to put this energy into constructive activities. Proceed not with resignation, or false optimism, but with an open mind about the unexpected, and a commitment to what you believe is right. The courts are likely to be in the headlines, taking actions deemed aggressive by many, whichever way they rule. Mars inconjunct Pluto at exactly 10 PM indicates a kind of death/rebirth experience in Mars related areas. We may feel drawn to cathartic experiences, or a crisis may turns us from our compulsions.
Lets look at Mars this week step by step. First, Mars square Uranus is impulsive, impatient and disruptive. Next Mars moves from fiery Leo to earthy analytical Virgo, one of the most circumspect signs. Then Mars inconjunct Saturn indicates a struggle to break through limits set by tradition but also the maturity of leaders, and resistance to censorship and other restrictions on liberty. Mars inconjunct Neptune can be confused, misplaced, deluded by ideology or apprehension. Mars sextile Jupiter can indicate cooperation between force and justice in a non-sadistic and even potentially liberating way. Then Mars inconjunct Pluto reveals the harsh and transformative consequences of reckless actions. Mars has many lessons to learn this week. Let’s take a good look at how anger, desires, and ambition operate in our own lives. Now is the right time to make necessary adjustments.
